What Types of Brain Injuries Are Common in Coral Springs and Florida?

There are actually two types of traumatic brain injuries: penetrating injuries and closed head injuries. Penetrating head injuries are usually caused by a knife wound, gunshot wound, or other situation where an object penetrates the skull. These can be very severe injuries and are obvious to see. Penetrating head injuries are dangerous because of the massive trauma that is sustained to the brain. Pieces of the skull can actually fracture and enter the brain. The penetrating object, such as a bullet or knife, can also cause life-threatening injuries to the patient.

Closed head injuries are caused by movement of the brain inside the skull. It usually occurs when the brain strikes a hard surface or if the brain is very violently shaken inside of the skull. In these types of injuries, the brain essentially bounces against the hard surface of the inside of the skull, leading to bruising and bleeding of the brain as well as other tissue injuries. These types of injuries can be extremely dangerous because they are not visible.

Diffuse axonal injuries (DAI) are a specific type of closed head and brain injury that occurs when the brain moves back and forth inside the skull. This usually occurs as a result of deceleration or acceleration. When the brain is shaken in this way, the nerve cells that allow neurons to send messages can no longer function correctly. These types of brain injuries can occur with sports injuries, shaken baby syndrome situations, whiplash injuries, and other incidents. Like other closed head and brain injuries, DAI injuries are very difficult to detect, especially since the patient does not even have to hit their head in order to sustain this type of injury. If you have been in a situation where you had been violently shaken, it is a good idea to speak with a doctor to rule out the possibility of this type of head injury. For example, if you have been in a trucking collision in Coral Springs or anywhere in Florida or another type of collision where you have been shaken violently, is a good idea to get a medical examination to rule out traumatic brain injury.
