What to Do After a Car Accident?

Being in a car accident is terrifying, but unfortunately it is all too common an incident on Miami streets. National statistics show that more than 400,000 Americans are killed in car accidents yearly and more than one million are seriously injured.

The Flaxman Law Group legal team has seen firsthand the challenges that car accident victims face. The legal team has dedicated themselves to helping car accident and personal injury victims in South Florida get the advocacy, support, and compassion they deserve. Charles Flaxman of the Flaxman Law Group has dedicated the last 25 years of his life to aggressively pursuing justice on behalf of victims.

First Steps After a Car Accident in Miami

If you have been in a car accident, there are several steps you will want to take:

1) If no one has been seriously injured and you are able to do so, get your car off the road. Florida law requires you to prevent obstruction of traffic whenever it is feasible. This helps prevent secondary car accidents or multiple car accidents caused by obstruction of roadways.

2) If anyone is seriously injured or there is extensive property damage and the risk of serious injury, call 911. In serious car accidents, the police will want to check for any possible violations of laws. Emergency personnel may also need to work with victims at the scene if anyone is seriously injured.

3) Say as little as possible and do not sign anything at the scene of the accident or immediately afterwards. Avoid excepting fault or even apologizing after an accident, as this can be seen as an admission of fault. In many cases, it is impossible to tell who has caused a collision immediately after an accident anyway.

4) Get medical help even if you do not appear to be immediately seriously injured. Some injuries, such as head injuries, may not present symptoms immediately but may be life-threatening. Visit your regular doctor or a local clinic as soon as possible after the accident for a full checkup.

5) Secure as much documentation as you can at the scene of the accident and afterwards. Exchange information with other drivers, get contact information for possible witnesses, take photos of the accident scene, and generally secure as much information as you can. If you are taken to a Miami hospital after your traffic accident, get a copy of medical records, police reports of the accident, and any other documentation you can. The more documentation you have, the more information your personal injury attorney will have to safeguard your rights.

6) Call a personal injury attorney in Miami as soon as possible after your accident. Contact a local personal injury attorney with experience in car collision cases. Your attorney can help you determine the total likely cost of your injuries, can start investigating the cause of the accident, can advise you of your rights, and can help you go over any legal documentation or insurance documentation you may be provided with.

7) Call your insurance providers as soon as possible after an accident. You will need to file a claim in order to get compensation for your injuries. However, you will at least want a lawyer's opinion about any insurance offer you get. In many cases, insurance companies want to resolve cases quickly and inexpensively. Charles Flaxman of the Flaxman Law Group worked in the insurance industry for ten years before dedicating his life to helping personal injury victims as an attorney. His unique experience and perspective allows him to evaluate insurance offers and to provide you with additional information about what your case may be worth.
